The Internet Archive's Whole Earth collection

Whole Earth editorial team

The first edition of the Whole Earth Catalog appeared In 1968. Conceived by Stewart Brand as a user-curated selection of the best tools and ideas for living beyond the limits of suburban/corporate America, the Catalog was iconoclastic, visionary and widely influential. Published between 1968 and 1972, it won the National Book prize and was cherished reading in nearly every commune and dorm room in America.

The Electronic Whole Earth Catalog is a very early CD-ROM presentation of The Whole Earth Catalog. Utilising HyperCard, The Electronic Whole Earth Catalog consists of over 9000 cards connected to one another with hypertext; essentially the web before the web existed, but offline! This emulated-in-browser item contains a 430MB disk image so please be patient while it downloads. Once the emulation has booted, open the Whole Earth Catalog folder and double click "Home" to launch.

"Planetary immunity: Biopolitics, Gaia theory, the holobiont, and the systems counterculture" - a chapter in General Ecology: The New Ecological Paradigm, edited by Erich H ö rl with James Burton (Bloomsbury, 2017) - argues for Gaia as Earth's immune system rather than its circulatory system.  The role of Whole Earth publications in forging a "systems counterculture" is his starting point.
